AI images & printing

How many pixels does an AI-generated image have?

An AI-generated image can look extremely sharp and detailed on a screen while still containing too few pixels for a large print. The actual pixel dimensions therefore matter more than how sharp the image appears on screen.

The DPI value stored in the file is not what matters most

A 1536 × 1024 pixel image contains the same amount of image information whether the file is labelled 72, 96 or 300 DPI. For printing, the combination of pixel dimensions, physical print size and viewing distance determines the required resolution.

Examples of common AI image sizes

ChatGPT / GPT Image1024 × 1024 or 1536 × 1024 px8.7 × 8.7 cm / 13 × 8.7 cmOften benefits from upscaling for larger photo prints or posters.
Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5)Around 1K, e.g. 1024 × 1024 pxApprox. 8.7 × 8.7 cmPixel dimensions vary depending on the selected aspect ratio.
Nano Banana 21K, 2K or 4K4K 1:1: approx. 34.7 × 34.7 cmCan generate significantly larger originals than many older AI models.
Nano Banana Pro1K, 2K or 4K4K 1:1: approx. 34.7 × 34.7 cmHigher resolutions may already be sufficient for many common print sizes.
MidjourneyE.g. 1024 × 1024 or 2048 × 2048 px8.7 × 8.7 cm / 17.3 × 17.3 cmSize depends on model, aspect ratio and quality mode.
Adobe FireflyVaries, up to around 2000 × 2000 px in common workflows2000 px: approx. 16.9 cmAdobe also provides its own image upscaling features.

The print sizes are approximate examples. Larger images can often be printed at a lower DPI when viewed from further away. Use the print calculator below for your own image.

Print calculator

Does your image have enough pixels for the print size you want?

Enter the print size, image pixel dimensions and approximate viewing distance. The calculator estimates the image's actual print resolution and whether AI upscaling is recommended.

4× AI upscaling recommended

The original image is too small, and 4× upscaling provides the best basis for the selected print size.

For 70 × 50 cm approximately 6,614 × 4,724 px is needed at 240 DPI.
